Video: Overview
Videos can be provided in OpenOlat in various ways and integrated into different contexts, partly also created directly in OpenOlat. This page gives you a quick overview of the most important options. For further details, use the integrated links.
Fundamentals
Videos can be used in OpenOlat either as a standalone element (e.g. as a learning resource Video or via the Video Collection) or embedded in other contexts (e.g. course elements, Portfolio, Projects).
Depending on the integration, videos are either displayed directly in OpenOlat and can be started manually or automatically, or they are available as a file and can be downloaded.
The central element for providing videos is the learning resource Video. A video learning resource can be integrated in courses via various course elements, provided with metadata and further designed with the video editor. Learning resources are created and managed in the Authoring area and listed under "My entries".

How do videos get into OpenOlat?
There are several ways to provide videos in OpenOlat:
- Upload a video as a file
- Embed a video as a link to a video that is available outside OpenOlat, on the Internet
- Record a video directly in OpenOlat, e.g. via webcam
Not all three variants are available in all contexts.
Display of videos
Depending on the integration, videos are displayed differently in OpenOlat:
- Directly embedded and playable, e.g. in the course element Video or Page, in HTML pages or in the ePortfolio
- As a link or attachment that is opened with a click, e.g. in the course element Folder or Forum
What can videos be used for in OpenOlat?
Videos can be used, for example, ...
- as information and teaching/learning content,
e.g. in courses via the course element Video and the learning resource Video - as a form of submission by learners, via the course element Task or Group task
- as feedback or sample solution by teachers, via the course element Task or Group task
- for interactive videos with additional learning activities (quiz questions, chapter structure, annotations), in the learning resource Video or in the video task
- as a collection of your own learning reflections, e.g. in the blog or portfolio
- for questions or answers in OpenOlat tests
- as a teaser video in the catalog and on the info page of courses and published learning resources
Embedding videos in OpenOlat course elements
Videos can be used in various course elements. Different ways are used for this:
- Course elements: Video, Video task
A link to a learning resource Video is created here, or a new learning resource Video is created by upload or URL.
- Course element: Page
A link to the Media Center is created. Videos can be uploaded, embedded via URL or recorded directly.
- Course element: HTML page
The TinyMCE HTML editor is used. Here it is possible to embed certain video types via URL or to use embed code in the HTML source code window.
- Course elements: Podcast, Blog
Here a video can be uploaded directly into the learning resource.
- Course elements: Folder, Participant Folder
A video file is provided without direct display (e.g. as a download). Videos can be uploaded or recorded.
Furthermore, videos are possible as an attachment to a forum posting or a notification, as a discussion element of the file dialog or as a teaser video in the topic broker.
Important
If you cannot find the course element or the learning resource "Video" in your OpenOlat instance, or if you cannot see the "Video Collection" menu, this has been switched off system-wide by the administrators.
