With the course element "SCORM 1.2", you embed interactive learning content in a course that was created with another authoring tool. SCORM stands for "Sharable Content Object Reference Model" and is a standardized format for interactive e-learning modules. OpenOlat supports the version SCORM 1.2. You create the SCORM package outside of OpenOlat. The learning resource with the learning content is also called "SCORM 1.2".
SCORM for learning, the Test course element for exams
SCORM is suited for knowledge transfer and for exercises that participants work on alone. The result from SCORM, that is the score or "Passed", reflects the learning status. The SCORM package runs entirely in the participants' browser, so the answers and the transferred result are technically accessible there. We therefore recommend conducting exams and certifications exclusively with the Course Element "Test".
Coach view
If you open the course element in the course as a coach, the tabs "Overview", "Participants" and "Preview" show you how far the participants have progressed.
In the tab "Participants", a click on a person opens their assessment. Above it, a list shows which data the SCORM package has transmitted for this person, with the current state of each chapter (SCO). The section Details of a SCORM course element describes what the list shows.
Owner view
If you open the course element in the course as an owner, you also have the tab "Reminders", unlike coaches, and can set up reminders there.
Editing in the editor
As an owner of the course, you create and edit the "SCORM 1.2" course element just like any other course element in the course editor: Course > Administration > Course editor. You then configure it in the tabs.
Tab "Learning content"
In the "Learning content" tab, you select the SCORM package and determine how it appears to participants and whether its results count towards the assessment. The tab is divided into the areas "SCORM", "Settings" and "Grading configuration".
If assessments already exist for the course element, OpenOlat displays the settings under "Grading configuration" that change the assessment result as read-only. "Prevent the score from decreasing on subsequent attempts", "Count attempts only if score is transferred" and "Maximum number of attempts" remain editable, as do the areas "SCORM" and "Settings". With "Enable edit mode" you make the other settings editable again, see Read-only assessment configuration.
SCORM
Select or import SCORM content. Click "Select or import" to upload a new SCORM package, or select an existing SCORM package from your entries. You import SCORM packages not only in the course editor but also in the authoring area. If you haven't yet selected a ZIP file as SCORM learning content, the message No SCORM 1.2 selected will appear next to the field "SCORM".

Actions in Authoring > Import
If you have already added SCORM learning content, its name will appear as a link. A click on the link opens the preview. To change the assigned SCORM learning content later, click "Replace" in the "Learning content" tab and then select a different SCORM package.
Display module
You have 4 options to choose from:
Show module within OpenOlat:
OpenOlat shows the main navigation at the top in addition to the SCORM module.
Show only module:
OpenOlat hides the main navigation when the course element opens and shows the SCORM module in the entire browser window.
Show module in full screen mode:
- The module takes up the entire space
- All navigation elements, except for the "Back" link to the course, are hidden
- Suitable for modules with a single "Sharable Content Object"
Show module in full screen mode, without "Back" link:
- The module takes up the entire space.
- All navigation elements are hidden.
- The "Back" link to the course is not available.
- Suitable for modules with a single "Sharable Content Object" and their own navigation.
With the two full screen variants, OpenOlat hides the fields "Show module menu" and "Show module navigation buttons".
Show module menu
If this checkbox is selected, OpenOlat displays the menu of the SCORM package on the left. This menu lists the chapters of the package, the "Sharable Content Objects" (SCO), and replaces the course menu while the SCORM content is open. Many SCORM contents come with their own navigation. In this case, you can hide the module menu to give the SCORM content more room. When participants leave the SCORM content with "Back", the course menu reappears.
Show module navigation buttons
If a SCORM learning content consists of multiple SCOs, this option makes OpenOlat display forward and back buttons that let learners move between the SCOs.
Skip launch page
With this option, the SCORM content launches immediately as soon as participants select the course element in the course menu. Without this option, OpenOlat first shows a launch page.
Close module automatically on finish
OpenOlat closes the SCORM learning content automatically once it is completed, and users return to the course view.
Transfer score from SCORM
Properly created SCORM packages can transfer certain parameters (points, pass/fail status, etc.) to the LMS. With this option, OpenOlat takes over the results from the SCORM package into the assessment.
Don't transfer scoring information: OpenOlat does not take any values from the SCORM package into account.
Transfer score value: OpenOlat takes the points from the SCORM package into its scoring.
Transfer passed value: OpenOlat only adopts the "Passed" or "Failed" status reported by the SCORM package; the underlying score does not count. The fields for the maximum and the required score therefore do not appear with this option.
Maximum score
If the SCORM package transfers a score to OpenOlat, you specify a maximum here. This limit is needed if, for example, the SCORM learning content awards significantly more points than the other course elements of the course. If the option "Include in course assessment" is then selected, the "SCORM 1.2" course element would otherwise get a disproportionately high weight.
Score needed to pass
If the SCORM package transfers a score to OpenOlat, you define here with an integer value how many points are needed to pass the course element.
Prevent the score from decreasing on subsequent attempts
If a person opens the course element multiple times, OpenOlat does not reset points already earned if the person earns fewer points on a subsequent attempt. A subsequent attempt therefore does not worsen an existing result. The field only appears if the option "Transfer score value" is selected under "Transfer score from SCORM".
Include in course assessment
This switch determines whether passing the course element and any points earned there will be included in the overall course grade.
Count attempts only if score is transferred
OpenOlat only counts the attempts of users if the SCORM package also transfers points to OpenOlat. Depending on when the SCORM learning content provides the points (e.g., regularly or only at the end of the session), the option takes effect either when users have completed a section of the SCORM learning content or only when the SCORM learning content is closed.
Maximum number of attempts
In the drop-down menu, you define how many attempts are allowed for this SCORM course element (unlimited or a number between 1 and 20).
Tab "Display content"
In the "Display content" tab, you determine how OpenOlat presents the SCORM content in the course. In the display mode "Standard", the fields "Embed Javascript library", "Embed glossary terms" and "Adapt layout" cannot be selected; they only take effect in the mode "Optimized for OpenOlat".
Display mode
Select "Standard" mode to display the resource as is. This mode is suitable for resources that experience display issues in "Optimized for OpenOlat" mode. For SCORM learning content, "Standard" mode is recommended, as OpenOlat has no control over the layout of the SCORM content (aspect ratio, etc.).
Select the "Optimized for OpenOlat" mode if you
- want to embed the course layout in the page and apply it to the SCORM content,
- want to use a JavaScript library,
- want to use the OpenOlat glossary on this page
- or want the page height to be calculated automatically.
Embed Javascript library
To use the features of the "Optimized for OpenOlat" display mode, the "jQuery" JavaScript library must be enabled. If you experience display issues with your content, do not select a library.
Embed glossary terms
Select this option so that OpenOlat can highlight glossary terms in the content if you have configured a glossary in your course. This option requires the use of the "jQuery" JavaScript library.
Display height
In this drop-down menu, you set the height of the content display area: "Automatic" adjusts it to the current window height, or you select a fixed value. The setting "Automatic" works better when Javascript is embedded.
Adapt layout
Select the "OpenOlat stylesheets" option to apply the layout defined in OpenOlat and in the course to your page (font, colors, size, etc.). If you do not want this customization, select the "None" option.
Content character set
OpenOlat attempts to automatically detect the character set. If the "Automatically" option does not produce the desired display, select a predefined character set for the content. If no encoding is specified, OpenOlat uses the ISO-8859-1 character set by default.
Javascript character set
Here you select a predefined character set for the JavaScript code. By default, the same character set applies as for the content.
Note
OpenOlat usually shows SCORM learning content with a launch page. If the SCORM learning content includes assignments and tests, this launch page shows the score achieved and the remaining attempts to complete the learning content successfully.
Tab "HighScore"
In the "HighScore" tab, you activate and configure the highscore for this course element. The highscore compares the results of the participants and ranks the individual result in comparison. The tab is only active if the option "Transfer score value" or "Transfer passed value" is selected under "Transfer score from SCORM" in the "Learning content" tab. With "Transfer passed value", OpenOlat does not take over any points from the SCORM package, so participants do not see a highscore in this case.

Tab "Reminders"
Owners of the course create reminders in the course editor or directly in the course: if they open the course element outside of the editor, the tab "Reminders" is available there as well.
Both ways also show a preview and all sent reminders. Created reminders appear in a list. A click on the plus sign at the start of a row shows the rules of the reminder. In the expanded row, "Show e-mail message" shows the e-mail that is sent. With "Send reminders now" you trigger the dispatch by hand, without waiting for the next regular dispatch.
Tab "Badges"
If the awarding of badges is enabled in the course settings, the course editor shows the tab "Badges" for this course element. There you create a badge specifically for this course element. Owners of the course enable the awarding under:
Course > Administration > Settings > Tab "Assessment" > Section "Badges"
